Church struggle
Church struggle, 1897-1911: Church under the Cross. Church under the Cross was a short-lived Protestant federation in South Africa. This originated when members left the Dutch Reformed Church for religious reasons in the 19th and 20th centuries. This brief and matter-of-fact summary articulates the period between 1897 and 1911 and the division with the Reformed Church. Establishment of these congregations took place due to circumstances, factors and major changes in the Dutch Reformed Church. A number of objectors resigned from the church and came into being under the leadership of Rev SJ du Toit and the following congregations: Strydenburg; Clanwilliam; Ceres; Witbank (Tvl); Mier (Gordonia); Hoopstad; Lindley and Frankfort. This church grouping ceased to exist after the Churches under the Cross became part of the Reformed Churches in South Africa (GKSA/RCSA).
